WorriesAs a sophomore at university I worry about my future. One of my more depressing fantasies is completing my degree and then not being able to find a job applying any of my skills. There are things I know I want to do but I'm afraid I'll never get the opportunity to do them. I'm afraid I won't be able to start my career. I'm almost halfway done with my degree, and I could spend the next 4 semesters worrying myself sick over these things. The only thing I've discovered that makes me feel better is to take action; to not wait until after I've gotten my degree to start a career. I can start at least some of the things that I want to do right now and have a head start when I get out of school. Not everything I want to do requires a college degree. It's possible to start as soon as you like.Self Starters vs. The ComplacentI see other students around me that have become complacent. 4 or 5 years goes by quick. Undergraduate education far from takes up every waking moment. This is actually the best time to take risks because you're not banking on the success. This is a time when you are able to concentrate on other things if you want to. If you wait until you get out of school then you're putting a lot of pressure on every new endeavor because you need them to succeed financially in order to support you. You have 4 free years to screw around getting a career started if you're going to school. Use them wisely. This strategy is the reason I started this blog. I want to make money as a writer. In the future I want people to give me money for things I have written. I'm not sure I'll ever make money from this blog. I haven't made any yet, but I know that at least if I fail I will have something to show for it. I will have the work that I pumped out over the time I maintained this website to show people. Outside of content, I can show them that I am able to reliably produce well-developed content even when the situation is not ideal.Failure is Never FailureFailure is never really failure while you are experimenting with starting your career in your undergraduate. Even if you don't make any money from what you've done, you have whatever content you've produced. You end up at the very least with an established body of work to shop around to create new opportunities. You'll be making yourself a better candidate for future employers because you'll come off as someone who knows what they're doing. Most importantly, you'll gain experience with everything you do that will make you a more attractive candidate to hire. If you get a head start over your peers you'll look that much more mature and developed as a person when the pressure is on to start making money using your skills. No WorriesYou don't have to worry about finding a job after you complete your degree. You still need to get one, but you don't need to worry. Take the future pressure off yourself by acting now. You'll feel better about yourself and you'll be more self-assured. This will spillover in to other areas of your life and make all your other endeavors more likely to succeed. Success tends to breed more success. So the sooner you start the better you're going to do overall. So go out and start writing a novel. Write a comic book, and try publishing it yourself. Write a movie script or complete a painting. Maybe even start a blog. You have the time to do it so start now instead of worrying if you'll be able to make money off it later.Trackback(0)
